What is SPF?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measurement unit, that how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays, and save us from radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can cause skin cancer. Which SPF should I use? Is it 15 SPF or 20 SPF?
Which SPF number blocks most of the UVB rays?
SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
Another way of looking at it is:
SPF 15 (93% protection) allows 7 out of 100 photons throughSPF 30 (97% protection) allows 3 out of 100 photons through
SPF has the capability to block UVB rays and UVB rays, so it can prevent skin damage and tanning. In simple words, SPF increases the capability of your skin toleration from the sun's UV rays.
If you can stand for 10 minutes under the sun until you experience a sunburn, then SPF 50 sunscreen gel for oily skin will increase that time by 50x helping you tolerate it for 500 or more minutes and your skin will not get burned.
If you look at any sunscreen product, you may notice that some product comes with "Broad Spectrum Protection" or "PA+/++/+++". Now, what's that?
The PA rating system was developed from the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) method. This test uses UVA radiation to cause a persistent darkening, that is called ‘tanning of the skin’. PPD is tested on a variety of people, all exposed to UVA light.
Every test shows, how long it takes for their skin to tan. Then compare the results between protected and unprotected skin.
These conversions go as follow:
If a product’s
PPD = 2 to 4, PA = PA+
PPD = 4 to 8, PA = PA++
PPD = 8 to 16, PA = PA+++
A sunscreen with a PPD rating of 10 should allow handling 10 times as much UVA exposure. PPD values can’t be measured precisely because there’s no standardized system for evaluating PPD scores.
The strength of the UV rays depends on a number of factors, such as:
Time of day: UV rays are more harmful between 10 am and 4 pm.
Season of the year: UV rays are more harmful during the spring and summer months.
Distance from the equator: UV exposure goes down as you get further from the equator.
Altitude: More UV rays reach the ground at higher elevations.
Cloud cover: The effect of clouds can vary. Sometimes cloud cover blocks some UV from the sun and lowers UV exposure, while some types of clouds can reflect UV and can increase UV exposure. What is important to know is that UV rays can get through, even on a cloudy day.
Reflection off surfaces: UV rays can bounce off surfaces like sand, water, pavement, snow, or grass, leading to an increase in UV exposure.
Health Effects of UV Radiation
1. Skin Cancer
There are two types of skin cancer
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and sadly, it's now one of the most common cancers among youngsters, mostly adults ages 15-29. Due to this, more than 75 percent of skin cancer patients lost their life. UV exposure, particularly during childhood increases the risk factors for the disease. So, protect your children now!
Non-melanoma skin cancers are less deadly if we compare to Melanoma. They can spread more serious health problems. There are two primary types of non-melanoma skin cancers:
2. Basal cell carcinomas: Is the most common type of skin cancer tumors.
3. Squamous cell carcinomas are tumors that may appear as nodules or as red, scaly patches.
4. Cataracts and Other Eye Damage5. Premature Aging and Other Ski
6. Immune Suppression
